Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning)
Regular Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) treatment is prescribed for patients who present with a general healthy medical record and have few to no signs of periodontal disease (low plaque levels and clinically healthy pocket levels between 0-4mm). Prophylaxis is recommended 2 times a year to promote a healthy mouth and overall good health.
Some benefits of prophylaxis include:
- Tartar and Plaque Removal: Both tartar (calculus) and plaque can cause severe periodontal issues if left untreated, especially when the buildup is both above and below the gum line. Even with proper brushing and flossing techniques, it can be challenging to get rid of bacteria, deposits, and debris from gum pockets.
- Aesthetics: A smile is one of the first things people notice, so it's hard to feel confident when yours is marred by yellowing or stained teeth. Prophylaxis can get rid of these type of stains and return your smile back to its original state.
- Fresher Breath: Periodontal disease is commonly signified by chronic bad breath (halitosis). Bad breath is usually caused by a combination of rotting food particles below the gum line, potential gangrene from gum infection, and periodontal issues. Not to mention, removing plaque calculus and bacteria also noticeably improves your breathing and eliminates irritation.
- Mouth Body Connection: The dentist is one of the first people to whom many health problems present themselves. This is because prophylaxis includes a comprehensive examination of the mouth, allowing the dentist to screen for oral cancer, assess the risk of periodontitis, and spot signs of medical conditions such as diabetes and kidney problems. The dentist can also recommend changes to be made to the patient's home care routine.
